Lil Wayne & Beyonce Land On Top 50 Highest Grossing Tours Of 2009 List

Labels:

Grammy-winners Lil Wayne and Beyonce Knowles have earned spots on the 2009 listing of highest grossing tours.

Dominated with mostly rock/pop acts like U2 and Elton John, Wayne's tours slightly out-grossed Knowles.

For all of the financial troubles of 2009, the concert business had an up year. The numbers for the Top 50 tours were better, across the board, than for 2008, be it total gross revenue or tickets sold. This year, U2 (No. 1, $123 million), Springsteen (No. 2, $94.5 million), Chesney (No. 6, $71.1 million), Jonas Brothers (No. 7, $69.8 million), DMB and "Walking With Dinosaurs" all topped the million mark. Newcomers to the list include Lil' Wayne at No. 26 with $32.1 million. Beyonce opened at No. 34 with $26.4 million. (Pollstar)
Wayne's tour profits for 2008 to 2009 placed him ahead of both Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Seventy-eight Lil Wayne headlining arena and amphitheater concerts in North America from Dec. 14, 2008, through Sept. 6, 2009, grossed approximately $42 million and drew nearly 804,000 fans, according to Lil Wayne tour producer and tour business manager Shawn Gee. The second highest-grossing rap tour that Billboard has tracked was Jay-Z's 2008 jaunt with Mary J. Blige, which grossed $34.6 million and drew 310,694 concertgoers to 28 shows, according to Billboard Boxscore. Kanye West's 2008 Glow In the Dark tour comes in third, having pulled in $30.8 million from 49 concerts that attracted 507,853 fans. (Billboard)
